At this Wednesday's meeting we had 13 members present and one Guest Rotarian , Alex Anderson, Rotary Club of Mt Eliza in Victoria Australia.
Sheila stood in front of the banner, recited the Four Test. Everybody participated and it was in perfect unison.
Rotary Moment:
John recounted the project of the Rotary Club that he attended in Bangkok. Every Sunday, the club comes together, providing books in all languages from all around the world, and volunteers read the books to the attendees in the different languages., A fantastic Literacy project.
Announcements:
1) Club Christmas Party- 4 PM on December 5 at Lawrence and Bev’s house. Bring a gift from each person attending (up to value of $20.00) for the exchange, and bring either Appetizers or Dessert and your own drinks. Merry Christmas
2) Seniors Christmas Luncheon- Remember that this time, we will not be eating. We will help in serving, and any way we can. If volunteers could come by 11 AM, that would be good. We expect 250 seniors.
3) Raffle Tickets- Be sure that you have a copy of the list of prizes included in the five drawers. There are a couple items still be arranged. Jan 9 is the draw day. Try to get the stubs and money in before the end of the year if possible.
4) Tax Receipts- If any of your donors to Hoopathon paid through the club rather than CHIMP, advise Peter of their names, addresses and amounts and he will send them a tax receipt
Today we had Mary Kato and her 3 students, as our guest speakers. Some of the highlights of this presentation were:
Vicente ( Vic) Asuncion was our speaker today doing his classification talk. He first arrived from the Philippines in 1972, spent a couple of years here then returned to home in after a couple of years, and eventually returning in 1988- 91, and completed his Canadian law qualifications here in Vancouver. His wife of 35 years, Mary Anne was born in Malta and lived in Australia, in her youth. Vic is still active in his law office. He related that he was in the Philippines when the Polio Plus program started and also when they eliminated Polio a few years later. He originally joined Rotary in 1978, and joined the Quadra Club when he came back to Vancouver. We are very happy to now have Vic as a member of our club. Welcome!
NEXT WEEKS PROGRAM-
Ron Suzuki, from Strathcona centre will bring two students receiving scholarships from the club. Graham Salvail will discuss his former Rotary Quadra club’s project concerning footwear.
