We had 13 members and our guest speakers, Tanya and Ailsa from the Vancouver Fruit Tree Project Society. Announcements: * John Haley reminded us to consider donating to our club's own foundation before the end of this year. This way you can get a tax receipt for this year. * The Hoopathon 2020 will be on May 9th. The next meeting for the event will be in late January, stay tuned! Rotary Moment Ron brought us the Rotary Moment this week. He spoke about Rotarians Celebrating Diversity every day. 1878 Chinese Head Tax Federal ruling all Chinese immigration grants had to pay $50.00/family member to stay in Canada. In the Chinese Immigration Act 1923 banned Chinese from Immigrating to Canada until 1945 Vancouver Chinese Canadians could not vote in civic elections and banned from Municipal Jobs until 1948 Sunday, April 22nd the Mayor called a Special Council Meeting to publicly apologize to the Chinese Community of Vancouver for implementing and supporting the laws of their predecessors. In 1921 when Racial Restriction was addressed in Rotary it was formally determined that racial restriction would not be permitted. Non-Racism was included in the Rotary terms of the standard constitution in 1922, required to be adopted by all member clubs. Guest Speakers Our Speakers this week were Tanya and Ailsa from the Vancouver Fruit Tree Project Society. The Vancouver Fruit Tree Project is a non-profit society in Vancouver, British Columbia. Our volunteers harvest extra fruit from backyard fruit trees and share it with community groups. In the past 20 years, we have picked over 68,000 pounds of fruit and redistributed it to community centres, neighbourhood houses, daycares and other community initiatives around Vancouver.
When the fruit picking season begins in June, the VFTP’s priority is to connect fruit tree owners with volunteers who want to rescue unpicked fruit. We will reach out to more than 175 tree owners and 200 volunteers to pick thousands of pounds of fruit every year.. Information about our current projects can be found here:
