Rotary Moment:
John Haley told us about a project from the Gibsons Rotary club called "Roll the Hippo". These hippos are water rollers that help women and children in Africa (http://www.roll-a-hippo.com/Rotary). Our club has pledged 3 hippos, please contact John to make your pledges. Each hippo costs only USD150.
Announcements:
1) Peter Fox is our new treasurer, let's all try to make his job easier!
2) The seniors lunch will take place on December 13th at the Coast Plaza hotel. We expect 250 seniors to attend.
3) The 2016 edition of the Hoppathon will take place on June 4th. Please let Gary Chomyn know if you would like to be part of the committee.
4) We are still gathering donations for our Christmas raffle, our goal is to have $5K in ticket sales.
Our guest speaker was John McCormack from Kelowna. He spoke about RESTOR International (formerly Rotaplast Canada) is a non-profit humanitarian organization that provides free reconstructive surgery to disadvantaged children and adults in developing countries. With the support of Canadian medical and non-medical volunteers.
Some of the highlights of his presentation were:
- They perform 60-80 surgeries per mission.
- Besides cleft palate, they also treat burns and uterine prolapse cases.
- In addition to the surgeries, they also train local doctors and nurses in treating these conditions.
